Microneedling is a superficial procedure which has become increasingly popular for facial rejuvenation and the treatment of acne scars. This is an office-based treatment which uses tiny needles to puncture the superficial layer of the dermis and stimulate regeneration of collagen. Microneedling can be combined with topical treatments such as platelet rich plasma (PRP) to improve its efficacy. It is likely that at least three treatments will be necessary for significant and lasting improvement in facial texture and appearance.
Compared with laser treatments, which are another effective option for the treatment of scars, microneedling demonstrates a shorter downtime and lower risk of postinflammatory hyperpigmentation. Microneedling is also a safe option for patients with darker skin who are more prone to discoloration with laser treatments.
